Tips from Experience
Show up early - Shelter beds, meals, jobs all go fast
Be persistent - Applications take time, keep following up
Stay clean - Use All Roads showers daily if possible
Save something - Even $10/week adds up to housing deposit
Ask for help - Case managers, librarians, volunteers want to help
Follow the rules - Shelter isn't perfect but it's better than outside
Path to Housing
Getting housed takes time (usually 6-12 months). Here's the realistic path:
- Get into shelter (call Coordinated Entry)
- Apply for benefits (SNAP, Medicaid, housing voucher)
- Work with case manager regularly
- Find income (any job is a start)
- Save money for deposit
- Get on housing waitlists
- Stay consistent, keep showing up
